Family Dinners: A Disappearing Tradition

When I was growing up and again as I was raising my children, some of our best family times together were around the supper table. I understand that is no longer the norm these days, and that concerns me.

I jokingly complain sometimes that while I was the one who home schooled our children and worked with them day in and day out on math, grammar, and such, like their dad they are all now more interested in politics and world events. How did that happen?

Tim planned to teach the kids history and political science courses, but formal instruction by him just never happened. However, we did talk about those things around the dinner table, and they stuck.Continue Reading

woman covering her mouth You’d think by the time a person is my age, she would have it all together, right? At least said person should know when to say things and when to keep her thoughts to herself, right? Well, unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

For example, yesterday I was visiting with a couple of young friends. We were discussing a certain style that’s popular today. One of the women mentioned that she hadn’t decided yet what she thought about the style, and I spoke up and said in no uncertain terms that I didn’t like it.

Never Forget!

Have you thought lately about how many people don’t really know about or remember the terrorist attack on the United States on 9/11/2001?

Thursday is Patriot Day and the 13^thanniversary of 9/11, so anyone younger than 13 years old wasn’t even alive when it happened. Add to those youngsters the people who were so young that they either don’t remember it at all or very well, and you have quite a number of people. I think we can safely say that many people into their early 20s don’t have the memory and/or understanding of what happened on 9/11.

I recently listened to an audiobook, Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero by Michael Hingson and Susy Flory. It’s a true story of Michael Hingson’s experiences on that day. I think reading this book together with your children is a good way to teach them about this part of our history.

I hesitated to get the book when I first saw it, because, unlike those younger people, I remember all too well what happened that fateful day and I don’t handle graphic details about it very well. It still hurts too much.Continue Reading
