A Weekend Without TV

While sitting waiting for my hair to dry, I got to looking around Tim’s sparsely furnished apartment. I decided that it was a lot like being at camp.

You see, my husband Tim decided, after spending lots of time in Austin during the last legislative session, he would just get an apartment there this year. I visited him and his apartment for the first time Valentine’s Day weekend.

So, have you bought your tickets yet for Fifty Shades of Grey? I hear that ticket pre-sales are off the charts.

Oh, wait. It’s rated R. That should be our first clue that there is questionable content.

Some time back I became convicted that I should not go see R-rated movies. The ones that are so rated for the violence are bad for me because they are so graphic. The pictures are disturbing and stay with me for a long time.

The ones rated R because of sexual content are also explicit, so I won’t see them because I want to follow scriptural guidelines. I believe the Bible is the final authority for all truth and practice. What? The Bible talks about R-rated movies? . . .  about Fifty Shades of Grey?

Are You Peculiar?

Did you know that the Bible says that Christians are a peculiar people? (Titus 2:14, 1 Peter 2:9 KJV)

You might be glad to know that the word that’s translated “peculiar” in the King James Version means “set apart” in our language today. It doesn’t mean what we usually think of as someone who is peculiar. In our culture, that pretty much means weird.

As Christians, as set-apart ones, however, we should look and be different from people who are not believers. I don’t think that means being different just for the sake of being different, but being different from our culture in areas that are not pleasing to the Lord.

And there’s plenty of that in our society to avoid these days.
